TITLE: Conservation Genetics Lab Technician
REPORTS TO: Conservation Genetics Laboratory Manager
LOCATION: Atlanta, GA
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
STARTING DATE: April or May 2024

This is a part-time position funded at 20 hours/week, a maximum of 1070 hours, at $18/hour.

JOB FUNCTION:
The Conservation Genetics Lab Technician will assist with laboratory procedures related to several ongoing projects in the Conservation Genetics Laboratory in the Conservation & Research Department at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Conservation Genetics Laboratory Manager and the Research Scientist, Genetics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with Conservation Genetics projects via DNA isolation using the CTAB method or kits, PCR, gel electrophoresis, sample organization, and summarizing project results.
Assist with accurate data collection and data entry needs in the lab.
Assist with organization and sample management for the DNA Biorepository Collection.
Assist with lab equipment maintenance, organization, and upkeep.
Aid in training volunteers and high school and undergraduate interns.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable.
Holds an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Plant Biology, Biology, or related field.
Minimum of one year of prior work experience.
Prior experience with DNA isolation, gel electrophoresis, and PCR is highly desired.
Must have a valid Georgia Driver’s License.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lb.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to spend long periods of time in the laboratory performing complex protocols, often standing or moving between equipment. Must take careful notes and contribute to laboratory organization. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Excellent organizational and time management skills. The ability to respond effectively to multiple, changing, and often conflicting priorities is essential. The candidate must also be able to interact effectively with the general public, co-workers, and peer professionals.
