POSITION SUMMARY:
The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is a not-for-profit institution, dedicated to discovering, saving, and studying the world’s tropical plants and sharing what is learned. Our network of five botanical gardens, preserves and research facilities encompasses nearly 2,000 acres with locations in Hawaii and Florida and a herbarium (PTBG) housing over 85,000 specimens. Our collection includes the largest assemblages of native Hawaiian plant species and breadfruit cultivars in existence. Many of the species in our collections are threatened and endangered or have disappeared from their native habitats. In our preserves and beyond our gardens, NTBG is working to restore habitats and save plants facing extinction. Our gardens and preserves are living laboratories and classrooms for staff scientists, researchers, students and visitors from all over the world. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:
The successful candidate will provide leadership and develop efficient and effective strategies for all of NTBG science across NTBG's five gardens, conservation program, and living and herbarium collections, insuring that all programs are integrated for function and process. In addition, the purpose of this position is to perform scholarly research concentrating on Pacific island plants, utilizing a broad range of modern techniques for plant systematics, conservation, ecology, or ethnobiology. Particular emphasis should be made on developing collaborative research involving various NTBG staff and external collaborators. The incumbent will serve as a representative of the NTBG in matters relating to funding, fieldwork, and public outreach concerning plants and should be able to effectively communicate complex biological and conservation principles to diverse stakeholders. Key aspects of the skill set required for the position are outlined below:
Leadership: This position requires demonstrated leadership ability and effective interpersonal and communication skills, strong collaborative skills, and experience guiding and motivating diverse staff and volunteer teams and rallying support from audiences ranging from students to donors.
Program Integration: Demonstrated ability to integrate the activities at multiple sites into an efficient and functioning series of research-based programs and to ensure interconnected processes across diverse programmatic elements such as field collections, living collections, herbarium, and conservation projects.
Funding: Demonstrated ability and experience in independently securing external funding from national, international, or donor sources.
Research: Record of independently initiating, developing, and personally participating in research and fieldwork concerning biology, ethnobiology, ecology, and/or related fields with Pacific island plant focus preferable. Published work including scholarly publications and ability to keep abreast of new developments and related research. Experience serving as a consultant and expert adviser on professional matters in this area to internal and external stakeholders.
Knowledge, skills and abilities: The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated scientist with extensive experience as a project manager and strategic thinker well-versed in the opportunities for research on oceanic islands and the challenges facing Pacific Island biodiversity. Additional duties may include departmental administration, planning and budgeting, supervision of personnel, and serving on committees.
Education and experience: Minimum requirements: Ph.D. and several years of successful research and leadership experience; record of scientific publications in relevant areas; record of successful grant and fund-raising.
