PhD student funding opportunity: Huizingh Desert Research Fellowship
The Huizingh Desert Research Fellowship is a joint fellowship program between Arizona State University and the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix to support a student pursuing a Ph.D. in the ASU School of Life Sciences. The successful applicant will pursue a Ph.D. in desert ecology, molecular plant biology, plant taxonomy, plant ecophysiology or related fields and will be advised or co-advised by scientists affiliated with the Desert Botanical Garden. The Huizingh Desert Fellowships provides 10 consecutive semesters of funding through a combination of research assistantships and teaching assistantships starting in the fall of 2020.
Eligibility and Requirements
Incoming Ph.D. student who has applied, or will be applying to a graduate program administered by ASU School of Life Sciences starting in the fall of 2020
Must be studying some aspect plant biology and/or ecology in desert environments
Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 during the tenure of the award
Must pursue doctoral dissertation research under joint guidance of a Desert Botanical Garden (https://dbg.org/research-conservation/) research scientist who holds an adjunct faculty position within ASU-SOLS and an ASU-SOLS (https://sols.asu.edu) faculty member
Publications resulting from the student’s research will acknowledge support from the Desert Botanical Garden and ASU School of Life Sciences through the Huizingh Desert Research Fellowship
Interested applicants are encouraged to directly contact a Desert Botanical Garden scientist and / or a faculty member in ASU-SOLS whose research concentration matches their area of interest.
Award
Five years (10 semesters) of funding
Includes three years of funding (six semesters) in the form of a research assistantship
Two years (four semesters) of funding provided by the School of Life Sciences in the form of a teaching assistantship

Cover letter describing your research interests and clearly stating how your research will be enhanced by collaboration with DBG and ASU scientists
Request that your potential graduate advisor (either from a DBG scientist or a SOLS faculty member) prepare a letter of support by the application deadline. This letter should indicate your advisor’s interest in serving as your mentor.
