Assistant Curator, Mycology - New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden is seeking an outstanding Systematic Mycologist for a career-track appointment in the Institute of Systematic Botany, International Plant Sciences Center. The successful candidate will develop an innovative collections-based and laboratory research program focused on important issues in fungal systematics and evolution, supported by extramural funding from federal and private sources. They will also use diverse data (emphasizing but not limited to systematic and floristic data) in creative ways to identify conservation priorities and to inform and participate in the conservation process. 

Additionally, as an Assistant Curator, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and actively helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop a strong program of research that will build on the collections of the Steere Herbarium (NY) and make full use of the herbarium, the Mertz Library, and the facilities of the Pfizer Laboratory.
Produce a substantial body of publications and contribute service to the Science programs, the institution, the scientific community, and the public, the latter for example by providing outreach related to fungal identification inquiries.
Taxonomic focus on a large fungal group will be an asset, as will the ability to identify species across a broad range of genera and families of fungi.
Enhance NYBG’s graduate studies program by advising graduate students and/or teaching graduate-level courses.
Build integrative/collaborative research programs and develop new partnerships.
Provide service to the scientific and NYBG community, in the form of public outreach, editorial work, work in scientific societies, supervision of interns, etc.

Requirements:

Expected to show evidence of excellence in research, publication, teaching, and securing extramural funding, and have a Ph.D. at time of hire with a research specialty in fungal biology, with post-doc experience preferred.
Significant experience in fieldwork and in specimen-based research.
Experience in molecular systematics is essential.
Experience with innovative use of GIS is preferred, as is experience with application of systematic and floristic data to conservation, climate change, or other pressing global issues.
