The Plant Science Fellowship is a one-year internship run jointly between the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania and The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. The Plant Science intern receives training and work experience in many aspects of managing both physical and virtual herbarium collections, and an opportunity to gain experience in botanical research.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Provide general curatorial assistance and help manage (file, mount, repair, image, annotate, etc.) botanical specimens in the nationally important herbarium collection (PH) at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
• Participate in the ongoing botanical research activities in the Morris Arboretum Plant Science Department, which may include herbarium work (MOAR), field work, laboratory work, data analysis, or online work (transcription, georeferencing) in the virtual herbaria of the Mid-Atlantic Herbaria Consortium [midatlanticherbaria.org]
• Learn to follow proper safety practices
• Perform additional duties as requested
Qualifications/Requirements
• Undergraduate degree in Botany or Biology with course work in Botany required
• A dedication to building a professional career in botany required
• An ability to pay close attention to detail required
• Self-motivation, reliability, and an ability to work independently with minimal supervision required
• A healthy intellectual curiosity, engagement with the primary literature, prior experience with data analysis, and the ability to write scientific papers desirable
Work Environment
Work time in this internship is divided between the Plant Science Department at Morris Arboretum (60%) and the Botany Department at The Academy of Natural Sciences (40%). The Plant Science intern may spend time out-of-doors, in the laboratory, or in other settings, as required. This position may require travel, with some travel covering multiple days.
