Herbarium Preservation & Museum Specialist (WSU)

The School of Biological Sciences at Washington State University is seeking a Herbarium Preservation and Museum Specialist. Depending upon your education and experience level, the School has a need for Herbarium Preservation and Museum Specialist 2, 3, or 4. Under the direction of the Herbarium Director, this position will manage day-to-day activities in the collection including management of student workers and volunteers. This position serves as the primary point of contact of the herbarium with WSU research and instructional faculty, visiting researchers, students, and interested members of the lay-public. Must be able to work independently.

Required Qualifications for the Herbarium Preservation and Specialist 2:

Positions typically require a Bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, fine arts, education or closely related field and two years experience as a museum curator; OR equivalent education/experience.

Required Qualification for the Herbarium Preservation and Specialist 3:

Positions typically require a Bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, fine arts, education or closely related field AND two years experience as a museum curator OR equivalent education/experience.

Required Qualification for the Herbarium Preservation and Specialist 4:

Positions typically require a Bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies, fine arts, education, anthropology AND four years experience as a museum curator OR equivalent education/experience.

For all applicants:

Background in biological sciences.

Demonstrable skills in specimen preparation and field experience.

Database management and programming skills.

Strong interpersonal skills including an ability to work cooperatively as a team.

Ability to communicate openly and clearly with colleagues.


Preferred Qualifications:

MS in Botany or Biology

Plant taxonomy/systematics research experience

Herbarium collections managerial experience

Monthly Salary: Commensurate with the education and experience level, the salary range will be as follows:

Herbarium Museum and Preservation Specialist 2: $2,999 - $3,887

Herbarium Museum and Preservation Specialist 3: $3,294 - $4,286

Herbarium Museum and Preservation Specialist 4: $3,792 - $4,974

Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.
