Orchid Research Botanist

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens invites applications for the full-time position of Orchid Research Botanist. The primary function of the job will be to conduct an integrated research program on the orchid family with a strong focus on the American tropics and subtropics. The researcher will utilize modern and traditional methods such as comparative morphology, molecular systematics, climate modeling, population genetics, pollination biology, ecology, floristics, and informatics, with the goal of understanding, and conserving plants and their natural habitats. A Ph.D. in plant systematics or a closely related field is required, and postdoctoral experience is preferred for this position. The successful candidate (SC) will maintain an active research program based on work in the field, herbarium, and lab, and measured by peer-reviewed publications, grant-funded proposals, and successful collaborations with other national and global institutions. A history of raising funds from a variety of sources is desirable. Other responsibilities include assisting with the development and curation of the Gardens living and preserved collections and with outreach activities and dissemination of research at public and professional meetings. The SC will serve as the assistant or chief editor for the Gardens scientific publications, aid in the organization of symposia, and take part in advanced intern- and university-level student education. Good public speaking ability is needed. The SC will interact with Selby Gardens administration, staff, donors, volunteers, and members to aid in raising funds, educating stakeholders about our mission, and promoting the work of botanical science.
