Temporary Lecturer, Systematic Botany

The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology is seeking a temporary lecturer for PB403/503 course in Systematic Botany (4 credit hours; lecture and lab). Depending on education and experience, the successful candidate will teach either PB 403 (undergraduate only) or PB 403/503 (undergraduate/graduate sections combined) for the Spring 2025 term. The course introduces students to systematic principles and methods as applied to vascular plants, with emphasis on flowering plants. It covers classification, identification, phylogenetics, and molecular approaches, and surveys important and common plant families representing major groups of vascular plants.

Minimum Education and Experience
-Master’s of Science Degree in Botany/Plant Biology with emphasis in Systematic Botany or a related discipline and at least two (2) additional years relevant professional or educational experience.
-A terminal degree is needed to teach at the graduate level.

Other Required Qualifications:
-Demonstrated experience in teaching hands-on courses or workshops at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional level in Systematic Botany or closely related subjects, such as Local Flora, Dendrology, Field Botany, Aquatic and Wetland Plants, and/or Grasses/Sedges/Rushes.
-Demonstrated experience identifying plants using technical dichotomous keys.
-Demonstrated understanding of plant morphological terminology.
-Demonstrated knowledge of the current scholarship related to angiosperm phylogeny and evolution.
-Demonstrated experience collecting plants and vouchering herbarium specimens.
-Excellent oral and written communication skills.
