The New York State Museum was established in 1836 and is the largest and oldest State Museum in the country. The New York State Museum currently has over 16 million scientific objects and specimens and over one million cultural objects in its collections. The mycology collection was established during the museum’s beginnings and now has over 90,000 cataloged specimens that includes over 2,000 type specimens. Curator of Mycology, Museum Scientist 3, Grade 25 (PEF)
The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 3 position in the New York State Museum. Under the general direction of a Museum Scientist 4, the Museum Scientist 3 will serve as the designated curator of the State Museum’s mycology collection, perform and disseminate related research, supervise subordinate collections and research staff, and contribute to exhibition, public, and educational programming. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Curate the Museum’s Mycology (fungus) collection by building and maintaining the intellectual integrity of the collection, while expanding the Museum’s mycology collection holdings according to Museum and discipline standards, and ensuring proper physical care of these collections;
• Maintain a well-established program of laboratory and field research in mycology;
• Design specific research strategies and conduct research based on the mycology of New York that meets the highest professional standards and will include utilizing the established Mycology Collection;
• Develop grant and other funding proposals to extramural sources to solicit support for research, curatorial, and educational programs;
• Participate in exhibit development and planning, and prepare research findings and research reports for publication as peer-reviewed journal articles, technical reports, monographs, books, and professional presentations;
• Participate in the development and implementation of public and educational programs to meet the Museum’s internal and/or community-oriented goals, which includes the Museum’s Evolution and Ecology Workshop for teachers and administrators in K-12 institutions, and the production of educational documents as well as live, in-person and/or pre-recorded lectures and field trips; and
• Develop methods and carry out means of communicating research to the Museum’s diverse audiences, including outreach to groups not traditionally represented in museums.
Minimum Qualifications:
Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive service as a Museum Scientist 3.
Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s in Mycology or related field and four years of professional experience in Mycology OR a Master’s of Science (M.S) in Mycology or related field and three years of professional experience in Mycology OR a Ph.D. in Mycology or related field and one year of professional experience in Mycology.
Preferred Qualification:
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• A Ph.D. in biology
• Research experience in mycology related to New York State
• Well-established analytical skills in biology
• A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications in biology
• Experience working with archived/museum mycology collections
• Involvement in educational outreach
• Ability to fund research and collections care through grants and/or other sources

The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 3 position in the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of the Director of Research and Collections, the incumbent will serve as the Curator of Botany within the Biology Program. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Serve as the Curator of Botany within the Biology Program, overseeing the curation of the Museum’s vascular plant, non-vascular plant, and lichen collections;

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have a doctoral degree in biology or related field and one year of professional experience in biology; OR a master’s degree in biology or related field and three years of professional experience in biology; OR a bachelor’s degree in biology or related field and four years of professional experience in biology.
Preferred Qualification:
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• A doctoral degree in biology with taxonomic/research experience in the flora of northeastern North America, and particularly New York;
• Well established analytical skills directly applicable to research on New York’s flora, including the analysis of DNA and/or ancient DNA;

Assistant Professor of Biology - Botany
The Department of Biology at Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX seeks applicants for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Biology with a specialization in Botany or a related field. Teaching, research, and service are the primary responsibilities. Candidates are required to possess the teaching skills and experience in botanical methods to engage in research with undergraduate and master’s level graduate students. Candidates with a strong interest or experience in college level teaching and research supervision will be preferred. The successful applicant is also expected to attend departmental events and perform other departmental duties as assigned. The position is a nine-month, on-campus appointment with the possibility of teaching summer classes.
Typical Duties/Job Duties
The successful applicant will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate level courses and labs with a special emphasis on plant biology (e.g., general botany, plant taxonomy, plant ecology, etc.) and other departmental service courses as assigned. The candidate should be willing to teach online courses as needed. The successful applicant is expected to develop an active research program and conduct research with undergraduate and graduate (master’s level) students. The applicant will also be expected to participate in departmental, college, and university level service and events, advise students, and oversee the direction of the ASU greenhouse and herbarium. Teaching load is equivalent to 12 contact hours/week.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The successful applicant should possess: Knowledge of botany and related fields sufficient to teach and assess academically rigorous undergraduate and graduate level courses and develop an undergraduate and master’s level research program, herbaria curation, and greenhouse management; Skill in teaching and research with a strong commitment to high professional standards, organization, interpersonal communication, and collaboration; Ability to develop innovative learning experiences, engage in community service, and participate in professional organizations.
Minimum Qualifications
Earned Ph.D. in Biology or related field from an accredited institution with emphasis on botany or related discipline. ABD applicants will be considered but the doctorate must be completed by the end of the first semester of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Potential for excellence in teaching, research, and mentoring students. Demonstrated ability to procure external funding. Experience in or knowledge of greenhouse operations and curation of herbaria.
Physical Requirements
The successful applicant must be able to perform light work in an office setting and to frequently stand, walk, sit, lift and carry light objects (up to 20 pounds) and perform similar actions throughout the workday.
