Collection Informatics/Database Specialist - Milwaukee Public Museum

The Milwaukee Public Museum seeks qualified applicants to serve as the application administrator of MPM’s Collection Management System (Axiell EMu) by administering security and access permissions, diagnosing and resolving system issues, consulting on the creation of procedures, training, data standards and authorities, and creating reports (75%). Support digitization and research efforts of cultural and biodiversity collections data by developing scripts to aid data cleaning, import and export, data management planning, and developing collection informatics projects and tools (25%).

Responsibilities

  • In this role you will work with our museum curators and research staff coordinating database modifications and system upgrades with the EMU software vendor.

  • Master the Emu Registry Module to administer system configuration parameters and user security access to ensure proper online and offline security is in place to protect data integrity and respect embargoed and sensitive information.

  • Diagnose and resolve system problems.

  • Facilitate the import, export and clean-up of records through de novo scripts and translate queries into Crystal Reports (SAP SE) as requested.

  • Document and make recommendations on mapping of data fields by working with the appropriate collections staff.

  • Prepare and provide database training for museum staff, students, interns and volunteers.

  • Serve as a member of the museum's collection digitization project team completing deliverables

  • Represent MPM at professional conferences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S., B.A.) from a four year university or college and 3 years of professional database administration experience or the equivalent

  • Proficiency in the use of databases (CMS), query language and spreadsheets

  • Competency in computer programming with Perl, python, R or similar languages

  • Familiarity with XML, HTML, CSS and other related web technologies is helpful
